What is my bike size?

Calculate your bike size with a simple data

Step 1: You have to know your leg length

In addition to body height, another measurement is crucial to make the right choice about your frame size; your inner leg length. Depending on the type of bike you want, the leg measured from the inside is the basis for a perfect calculation that leads to the correct frame height for the bike of your dreams. Here’s how it works: Stand with your back against a wall – with bare feet and underwear. The heels should touch the wall while the knees are straight and the pelvic area is placed towards the ground in a linear (paraxial) way. The inseam / inside leg can be best measured with a water level horizontally and as close as possible in the crotch – the distance between the upper edge of the level and the ground will be measured with a meter. If a level is not available, a book can be used by making a square with the wall, in any case it is always recommended the help of another person.

Step 2: Correct choice frame

Based on the correct measurement of the inside of the leg, the appropriate frame size (for each type of bike) can be defined by aproximately calculation:

The numerical value in centimeters is now multiplied by a certain factor (different for each bike category). The result is box size or size in inches (1 inch = 2.54 cm). But only in some cases, the size will match exactly that offered by the manufacturer. Depending on the following, we will usually choose between two size options:

  1. For an athletic or sporty driving style, we will select the smallest frame.
  2. For a more relaxed position, we will select the largest frame size.

To find the right size of double suspension frame, we will have to multiply the inner leg measurement we measured earlier by the factor 0.225.

For example: 79 cm x 0.225 = 17.775

So the appropriate frame size could be a 18 “/ 46 cm. Size M.

In this specific case of the example, we would have to choose a 17 “for a sporty driving and a 19” for a more touristy use or character.

Too many calculations? To make it easier to consult the following table:

Rider height Frame size approx.

155 – 165 cm 14 – 15“ XXS 35 – 38 cm
165 – 170 cm 15 – 16“ XS 38 – 41 cm
170 – 175 cm 16 – 17“ S 41 – 43 cm
175 – 180 cm 17 – 18“ M 43 – 46 cm
180 – 185 cm 18 – 19“ M-L 46 – 48 cm
185 – 190 cm 19 – 21“ L 48 – 53 cm
190 – 195 cm 21 – 22“ XL 53 – 56 cm
195 – 200 cm 22 – 23“ XXL 56 – 58 cm

To find the correct frame size on a rigid MTB, we will have to multiply the inner leg measurement by the factor 0.226.

For example: 79cm x 0.226 = 17.854

For the right size we would be in a 18 “/ 46 cm. Size M.

In this specific case of the example, we would have to choose a 17 “for a sporty driving and a 19” for a more touristy use or character.

Here we have the tables again:

Rider height Frame size approx.

155 – 165 cm 14 – 15“ 35 – 38 cm
165 – 170 cm 15 – 16“ 38 – 41 cm
170 – 175 cm 16 – 17“ 41 – 43 cm
175 – 180 cm 17 – 18“ 43 – 46 cm
180 – 185 cm 18 – 19“ 46 – 48 cm
185 – 190 cm 19 – 21“ 48 – 53 cm
190 – 195 cm 21 – 22“ 53 – 56 cm
195 – 200 cm 22 – 23“ 56 – 58 cm

To choose the correct box in Road or Cross Cycle we will multiply the inner leg measurement by the factor 0.635.

In this case the theoretical result will be in centimeters.

For example: 79 cm x 0.635 = 50.165

We would be in a frame of about 50 cm. Sizes

Here are the tables:

Rider height Frame size

155 – 165 cm 48 – 51 cm XS
165 – 170 cm 51 – 53 cm S
170 – 175 cm 53 – 55 cm S/M
175 – 180 cm 55 – 57 cm M/L
180 – 185 cm 57 – 60 cm L
185 – 190 cm 60 – 62 cm L/XL
190 – 195 cm 62 – 64 cm XL
195 – 200 cm 64 – ? cm XXL

CHOOSING THE RIGHT SIZE ACCORDING THE RIDER HIGHT

It is clear that exact data can not be given that are applicable to all people, since the body measurements vary from one to another individuals. One person may have a total height identical to another, but their measurements of legs, arms, trunk, etc. Be very different, so giving absolute guidelines is not possible, nor recommendable. However, we do dare to offer you some data, only for guidance, which will at least help us approach our ideal size taking into account our total height.
